#See2020 EP. 03 : "Can PM 2.5 affect our eyes?" PM 2.5
Absolutely. Since our eyes are directly exposed to PM 2.5, higher levels of pollution increases risks of various eye diseases and symptoms.
PM 2.5 dust adheres to our eyelids, corneas and conjunctiva causing eye irritation, discomfort, and may also cause the following eye diseases:
- Conjunctivitis caused by dilated blood vessels in the conjunctiva.
- Dry eye due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
- Eye allergies and swollen eyelids.
- Increased risk of eye infection.
How can we protect our eyes from PM2.5?
Here are my recommendations:
- Wear protective eyeglasses if you have to go outside. This will help minimize your exposure to the pollution.
- Blink frequently to stimulate tear production and wash away any debris that has accumulated on the surface of the eye.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes.
- Use artificial tears (preservative-free) to prevent dry eyes and reduce the adhesion of dust on the eye surface.
- Make sure that you get adequate rest to avoid eye fatigue. Your eyes have to work harder than usual under high PM 2.5 conditions.
- Do not wear contact lenses and eye makeup if your eyes are feeling sore or itchy.
- Wash your hands often.
- Install a high-quality air filter or air purifier system at home to help protect your eyes and overall health from pollutants.
If you have any of the above symptoms, please see an ophthalmologist for proper medical care.
Our eyes are very important organs that help navigate our way through the world. Take good care to maintain good vision and a high quality of life.
